How do americans view the speaking of other languages other than English in U.S. society?

for my cl I have to do a data collection project based on the question above. How would I go about answering it? The proffesor told me I should start by looking into language advocacy and all that but then what else and what other methods can help me answer this question..help please! thanks :)
